Ms Debbie Sheringham-Boom Reviews Two New Spinout Nuggets Releases from The Hurricanes and Paul Groovy & The Pop Art Experience

Paul Groovy & The Pop Art Experience "He's A Liar"
Ms Debbie Sheringham-Boom, bassist with the fabulous Thee Girl Fridays has a listen to two new releases from our busy friends over at the rapidly expanding Spinout Nuggets label.

Paul Groovy & The Pop Art Experience "He’s A Liar / You’re Gonna Miss Me" (Single)
"With a musical history spanning no less than four decades, Paul Groovy and his band The Pop Art Experience release their first vinyl offering on Spinout Nuggets with original composition "He’s A Liar". From the get-go, Groovy’s gnarled vocals let you know that he’s in a bit of a tizzy about something, and luckily backing vox Jane Hornet provides a soothing counterbalance. If you like your Garage with the emphasis on Rock a la The Fleshtones, The Miracle Workers, The Stooges and even The Saints then this will be a sure fire hit for you. The flipside is a cover of a ‘60s garage holy grail classic - The 13th Floor Elevators "You’re Gonna Miss Me". It is a brave move to attempt such a monumental tune, but as it is done in their own Pop Art style, it is more of a compliment than a copy and thus sounds, you guessed it. Groovy."

The Hurricanes "Look Out! It's The Hurricanes"
The Hurricanes "Look Out! It’s The Hurricanes" (LP)
"I have been looking forward to hearing this The Hurricanes 2nd LP since last year’s single release on Spinout Nuggets "Look Out!/Shake It", the latter of which was a personal favourite from 2019. Although I admit I hadn't heard their output prior to that, but that’s not always a bad thing. The album opens with the velocity of a souped-up Vespa burnout, and indeed it is aptly named for the first track "Take A Ride Tonight". Shall we take a ride with The Hurricanes? The Hurricanes employ that powerful ‘dun-duh-na dun-duh-na’ guitar sound - the accumulation of many British ‘60s bands such as The Eyes, The Creation and of course The Who, and latterly that of many revivalist bands. Tracks like "Right Down Inside The Blackout" and blazer "Don’t Hold On" evoke a touch of pre-Brit Pop Mod Indie rock reminiscent of the criminally underrated Five Thirty, but theirs is a less frivolous, more mature model thereof. Jones’s wall-of-sound guitar barely lets up throughout the whole album. There is no room for ballads here. Stand out tracks for me are power pop driven "The New Contenders" and the more garage-esque "Look Out!" and "Dancing On The Rubble". Why? Distortion, fuzz guitar, and the addition of a keyboard adds an extra layer of sound synonymous with that of their influences; and in this case it is a triumph. Loud Garage Mod. Does what it says on the tin." - Thanks to Debbie, don't forget you can check out Thee Girl Fridays here and grab their brilliant 7" vinyl EP "The Love Witch", also released by Spinout Nuggets, directly from the label here.

You can hear the new single from Paul Groovy & The Pop Art Experience and a song from "Look Out! It's The Hurricanes" in our brand new Retrosonic Podcast Episode 39. Check it out here...

The Rise of Spinout Productions: Amy K-B catches up with Lee Grimshaw on his ever-expanding musical empire

Mr Grimshaw
There's been many exciting developments over at the Spinout Productions rapidly expanding empire recently so Amy decided it was time to catch up with boss man Lee Grimshaw for an update.

Q. Hi Lee, congratulations on the second birthday of Spinout Nuggets! It's been a busy couple of years for you, what do you feel have been the highlights for the label so far?

A. Thank you! And thanks for all the support throughout! Never did I imagine how or where it would go, but I'm really humbled at it all. Every single moment has been a highlight, starting with Sergeants Mess, pounding all the way through to release number seventeen, with many more already planned. Last year we tried to aim for one release a month and to continue the same this year, but it's now looking to be maybe two or three a month, as so many good things are coming through. This year has already seen releases from Bully Bones, Ye Ascoyne D'Ascoynes, The Claim/Jim Riley's Blues Foundation, The Hannah Barberas and The Veras. I've really enjoyed moving through the 'genres', although there's still a distinctive sound between them all. The label is all about the creators be it the writers, performers, producers, mastering boffs, graphic artists or creativity providers in any form. I feel very humbled to be working with them all, and a pleasure to share with those that are supporting.

Ye Ascoyne D'Ascoynes
Q. You've worked with a wide range of artists so far – can we expect to hear more from some of your favourites?

A. They are all my favourites! I've been very lucky, I admit, and there's much more in the pipeline. I would love to blurt them all out, but that wouldn't be fun. We're soon to see the first label release from Paul Groovy & the Pop Art Experience, a band we've been playing on The Spinout Show for some time now, so great to have a release from them on the label. We're also soon to be putting out the second label release from The Hurricanes, their second album full of many goodies - full-on Mod-Garage-Power-Pop. Then there'll be the second label release from The Voo-Dooms, a six-track Mini LP.  I was fortunate enough to be at Ranscombe Studios during the second day of the recording, which was ace. Nice to see it all coming together. Then there's a six-track Mini LP from Palooka 5, another band I've spent some time with, mainly through Tim's stomping Club Kongo events in Taunton, where a few of the label's bands have played too. This will be the second vinyl release from Palooka 5, and it's mighty fine!
Palooka 5
After that, there's a follow up 7" release from The Treasures of Mexico, which I'm very pleased about. Another one that I managed to capture some of the recording during the studio time at Ranscombe Studios. Now with Nick Rice on bass, joining ex-members of The Dentists, Mark Matthews and Bob Collins, and Russ Baxter (he also of Secret Affair, and formerly Phaze, The Discords and so on). With some vocal help from Beth Arzy too. We're currently trying to decide which of the recorded tracks to put out first. Then, world meet The High Span! A fairly recent collaboration, with some known faces, another one I was lucky to catch during recording at Ranscombe Studios. I always try to get along and capture a little. The High Span are Kev Younger (Armitage Shanks, Ye Ascoyne D'Ascoynes, Subway Sect, The Speed of Sound and more), Mark Aitken, (Ye Ascoyne D'Ascoynes, These Guilty Men etc.) and Jimmy Moore (Moore more!). They've had a fair few gigs over the last year or so, and have attracted many ears. We're doing a four-track 7", and hoping to follow that up too. There's another project I've been working on that'll be out around the same time too, which will also be a milestone - there's quite a back-story to it too, and I'll save that for the next gathering. Oh, and another! Then more again! But as said before, they are all very special in their own way, and every single individual is a pleasure to work with. I think it's safe to say that the current global pandemic has changed some of the plans ahead, but we're doing as best we can to keep things going. The intention is for the label to always be an independent, DIY thing, but you must allow growth. We have recently set up distribution with Shellshock, in view of reaching out to some corners we haven't already, and we're still looking for someone to carry the distribution Stateside. Clear Spot have been covering mainland Europe for some time, and a pleasure to work with. We still do directs too, which is very important, and a pleasure. We've also dabbled in the dark world of digital for previous releases, due to getting requests for it, so we wanted full inclusion.

The Spinout Show
Q. I believe you've got a date for our diaries for this September?

A. Yes, September 5th at the Royal Function Rooms in Rochester and we'd love to see you all there! Dave and I play at the annual Shiiine On Weekender at Minehead Butlins every November, and have been lucky to help with the line up over the years too. Last year we actually got to program a stage, where we had Graham Day & The Forefathers and Big Boss Man in, with us DJing around them too. It went very well, and was a most enjoyable night. Steve Lamacq was even in the crowd for GD&tF show, jumping around. Rod Spark, who played with The Prisoners during their last ever gigs, was there to play in one of his bands, so Graham invited him along to join them on organ for some of The Prisoners tracks, which was good to see/hear. A memorable night! The evening went so well, we thought we'd try and recreate it as best possible, this time in Medway at Graham, Allan and Wolf's local emporium the Royal Function Rooms, the same venue as the Medway Music and Beer Festival, Kent Soul Club and more. To this day, Big Boss Man haven't played in Medway, so it will be great to have them in. We wanted to add something else to the menu, and it made sense to pick The Hurricanes to start proceedings. Their second album should be out soon (on Spinout Nuggets), and it's sounding mighty fine!  In addition to the live events on the evening, we wanted to invite some DJs in to help keep the music going from the start till the end, so we've invited local top man Rob Flood, Kent Soul Club Promoter/DJ Richard Flack and Cookin' Catfish Club Promoter/DJ Russell Deal (who's club night takes place in The Billabong Club at the back of the same venue at various dates throughout the year), in addition to Dave and I. All we need now is a good crowd of people to fill it up.

Q. What comes next for the ever-expanding Spinout empire?

A. Ah! Well, the label has a fair few releases lined up for the year ahead, as already said. We are working on the next label compilation, Chapter 2 also, but no particular planned release date as yet. I'm hoping to do a Spinout Nuggets showcase or two at some point, as it would be great to get everyone together. In some ways, Mick and Dave's club night The Primitive Club has already been an accidental part of this, with The Voo-Dooms (house band), Thee Girl Fridays, The Hurricanes and more planned too. The Spinout Show continues to go out every Wednesday, 6-8pm on NCB Radio (www.ncbradio.co.uk). Only realised recently that it's been almost four and a half years since Episode 1! We're currently up to Episode 217 at the time of writing - we've missed the odd week or two. We love guests on the show (remember when you and Rick joined us?). Dave has been able to help with more shows recently which is perfect. The record shop is still on the planning, but with being away so much, it's a little tricky at the moment. So, I'm continuing to sell old/new records online. I've been pondering a book division for the last year or so, as I have a few ideas, but I need a helper with that one! The sky is the limit, unless your ambition is Space! I'd like to end things with another huge thanks to all that have helped in many ways. It's really nice to be able to share something good, and it's much appreciated. There's lots that goes on in the background too, and I really do appreciate their input. Please buy records and support live music, and check out Damaged Goods Records, State Records, Heavy Soul Records, Trouserphonic Records and all those doing good things, including Retro Man Blog of course. We appreciate your ears!

The Fay Hallam Group at the Retro Man Blog Night, Half Moon Putney with King Mojo & DJ Lee Grimshaw

The Fay Hallam Group at The Half Moon Putney - Photo Retro Man Blog
Huge thanks to all that came along to our latest Retro Man Blog Night at The Half Moon Putney last Saturday, we really appreciate the support from all who turned up and made it yet another very special evening. Headliners The Fay Hallam Group treated us to a superb set featuring songs from throughout Fay's musical career. From Makin' Time's Mod Soul classic "Feels Like It's Love" via Phaze's groovy instrumental "Sixty Six" right up to a brand new unreleased track from their forthcoming LP "Propellor". Along the way we had tracks from The Fay Hallam Trinity such as "1975" and a crunching "Always The Sky" rubbing shoulders with a selection of tunes from her collaboration with The Bongolian and a shimmering cover of "Spooky". They played some excellent songs from the current album "House of Now" and the classic Soul of the single "Now That It's Over" with Fay's son Josh taking over Magnus Carlson's vocal parts. The band, including Paul Weller collaborator Andy Lewis, were on top form and got called back for two well deserved encores. Opening the show we were delighted to welcome back King Mojo for their second appearance at a Retro Man Blog Night following their stunning support at out SolarFlares reunion shows a couple of years ago. They played most of the excellent debut LP "Do Not Feed The Dancing Bear" and their powerful Hammond driven songs went down really well with the crowd. Also impressing everyone with his customary cool music taste was DJ Lee Grimshaw from the Spinout Show and it was great to have him involved once again. Thanks to Lee, the bands and all the Staff at The Half Moon, and once again a big thank you to those who turned up - it really does make it worthwhile.

The Nettelles: "We Are.../I'm Over You" Second Limited Edition 7" Vinyl Release of Prime Garage Rock from the Spinout Nuggets Label

Our friends over at Spinout Nuggets, the record label set up by Spinout Productions, follow up their debut release by the Medway Garage Rock outfit Sergeants Mess with another limited edition 7" Vinyl Single this time by the Edinburgh based band The Nettelles. Just like they did with Sergeants Mess, Spinout have uncovered another gem by an act that might not be familiar but some of the names of those involved most certainly are. So let's find out some more...

We are The Nettelles and we're gonna sting you! The Nettelles are a Garage Punk band based in Edinburgh, Scotland, who sprung up in 2016 after former Sally Skull members Clare and Saskia got together for a reunion. Following the reunion, they wanted to keep making music together and wanted to make it bigger and louder and thus recruited close friend Caitriona on keyboards as she’d 'always wanted to be in a band’, and enlisted Angus in on drums. The Nettelles was formed! Together, they make Garage influenced music and have also been known to cover songs by The Pandoras, The Brood, Shadows of Knight and Sally Skull of course. On this limited hand numbered 7” vinyl release of 300, the ‘We Are….’ double-A side release is the first for this line up as The Nettelles, but it won’t be the last! ‘I’m Over You’ is a Garage-Punk hit, with an intro that sucks you in, swirls you around, and spits you out some three minutes later. ‘We Are….’ is the answer to your question ‘Who are The Nettelles?’, providing a sting or two with an introduction to the band themselves. Recorded in June last year at Ravencraig Recording Studios, Edinburgh, both tracks are boldly produced by a combination of The Nettelles and the multi-talented Russ Wilkins (Lord Rochester, The Wildebeests, The Gruffmen, The Len Bright Combo, The Mindreaders, The Pop Rivets, The Milkshakes) who also famously produced The Prisoners "The Last Fourfathers" LP, amongst many other musical wonders. The Nettelles members can also be found in other musical combos. Saskia also plays bass in Rock ’n’ Roll combo Lord Rochester and Angus plays various instruments in various bands including Scottish Garage legends The Thanes, French popsters Les BOF!  and The Sensation Seekers. Keep an eye out for The Nettelles live outings.

This release will be available via Spinout Productions from 4th June.

DJ Lee Grimshaw Talks to Amy KB about the New Sergeants Mess 7" Single, his Debut Release on Spinout Nuggets Label

DJ Lee Grimshaw
Amy KB: Tell me about Spinout Nuggets, what inspired you to start your own label?

Lee Grimshaw: From a very young age, I dreamed of running a record label, owning a record shop and managing a music venue. Like many, I spent hours hunting for and buying records and I was lucky to have two older brothers who also shared the same love. We were regularly taking the train up to London together on Saturdays for record shopping or attending gigs and club nights all over the South East. The old TVS studios in Gillingham (which sat on our route to the train station) was always the place that my brothers and I pictured to be the venue that we would one day conquer and convert into a hub for all the above. Unfortunately, that plan never came to be, and it eventually became the site for yet another Lidl outlet. We had by then already relocated to Newquay, but the dream was still vibrant! Supporting record labels such as Detour, Damaged Goods, State, Crocodile, Heavy Soul, Vacilando ‘68 and many others over the years opened my eyes a little to how a passion and a dream could be combined and maybe become a reality.

I remember listening to the Retro Man Blog Podcast interview with Ian at Damaged Goods a few years back and felt inspired by Ian’s passion for pressing up the Slaughter and the Dogs reissue back in ’88. He even went along to actually witness the manufacturing at the pressing plant. At this time, my dream was still just that, a dream. Years later in 2017, I was lucky enough to be accepted for voluntary redundancy, following twenty-three years’ service, allowing me to have some investment cash for a few ongoing projects, including the label. I also experienced a life changing moment (losing a cherished family member too early in life), which gave me a little boot up the bum! So, the dream started to look a little more likely. The label was actually set up due to some unreleased tracks that were put my way (more on this later), and I’m really pleased with the whole thing. There was already a ‘Spinout Records’ in operation, so I needed to tag something different to the ‘Spinout’ name, and after many hours deep in thought, Nuggets felt good. I asked Darryl Hartley to help out with the logo, based on his mighty fine long line of sterling artwork.

AKB: What drew you to Sergeants Mess for the first release?

LG: While all the dreaming and redundancy affair was going on, Johnny Barker from the band kindly sent me a copy of the first Sergeants Mess EP, which was produced by Billy Childish back in 2002, to play on the Spinout Show. He’d hinted that they had further unreleased tracks available, recorded with the mighty Mole at Sandgate Studios in 2013, and he asked if I knew anyone who’d be up for getting it out. Well, I originally thought my time had come, but just didn’t know how to get the ball rolling. Jon sent the tracks through, and I got a one-off carved up in order to play during my DJ set down at the colossal Beatwave Weekender 2017. I played it on the show too, and there was some great interest in it. I made a few enquiries but it wasn’t the right time for other labels to get it out, due to other planned releases.

So, following an ad-hoc meeting with Jon in a Rochester boozer, I felt it was the right time, and what better release to start with than the Mess quartet. With the help and guidance from Mole at State Records (did someone say ‘State Records?!’) and Russell at Crocodile Records, I managed to get the ball rolling. Big thanks to those fellas for their time and support. Jon had already put the sleeve artwork together, and I added a few bits on, including the numbering, which I’ve always loved (it took me a whole evening to hand number these) and Jon printed them up too. It’s a real buzz to have such a collection of respected musicians for the first label release, just check out their collective musical journeys – Senior Service, CTMF, Buff Medways, Goodchilde, Daggermen, Phaze etc - their names appear on a fair few records in my collection, and I’m most certainly happy that it's a Medway band too! Plus the fact that the band share their name with the much remembered army surplus outlet in Chatham (don’t know if it’s still there or not, but I’m going back to the late 80’s on this one). Also, using Graham at Cyclone Music in Rochester for the whole pressing operation felt just right too, and the service was perfect.

"Sergeants Mess "Well That's Another Fine Mess" - On this hand-numbered limited edition 7” vinyl release of 300 copies, the Mess provide two stormers, each in it’s own parallel universe. "Couldn’t I Be Yours" gives a respectful nod to the Garage output of the 60s, and "Back In The Bag" is an experi-mental, yet very well constructed and funked up Kinks vs Gorillaz-esque wonder".

AKB: What can we expect to hear next on Spinout Nuggets?

LG: The label is no way intended to be something major or competition to anyone else but there are a few potential ideas for future releases. I would love to continue with it and roll out some real gems, and a few bands have already showed an interest in working on it. Hopefully, we may put one of our very own recordings out soon, either as Little Miss Mojo, or in a band offering, but I’m also up for any good offers. There’s also stuff I like that hasn’t been available on vinyl format up until now and I may work on trying to help arrange a release. Who knows, let’s see how it goes.

The Spinout Gang by Darryl Hartley
AKB: The Spinout Empire seems to be growing all the time! As we’ve discussed, you have the label, and the radio show but what else do you have planned for the future?

LG: Spinout Productions is the overall tag and it allows integration into other affairs, whether it’s flyer/graphic/design, entertainment assistance, whatever really. As a collective, we are really pleased with how things are going, and spending less time at a day job has allowed me to spend more time in all musical things (including the continued search for records). I’ve also managed recently to set up the new Spinout Productions website with the guidance of my brother Darren (thanks!), and I quite enjoyed the whole process, including the ecommerce shop side too. I’m hoping this may grow into a community-based hub for all our fave friends too. We totally appreciate all the support to date. For the Spinout Show, we’ll continue to run a live weekly one as much as we can (Wednesdays, 6-8pm, at ncbradio, with various guests. We’ve had some great additions, including some very special guests, our good friends Rick and Amy, the State Records take-over and our regular guests, brother Dave Grimshaw and Stevie Junk Wax. We’re always on the lookout for new music too, so send it to us!

The Spinout Revue continues to flourish, and we are lucky to be able to take this to various weekenders, festivals and venues throughout the year, in addition to our own organised affairs. We have only just returned from performing at the High Rollers Weekender in Las Vegas, under The Spinout Revue outlet, with live vocals from Little Miss Mojo, and we are pleased to have been part of it. What a weekend! We flew out with The Len Price 3 too, and they tore the roof off the place the night before us. We will certainly return to this great weekend, it was so well-organised (good work Eric, John, Patrick and the team), full of real nice people with such a good vibe. The whole ‘Revue’ idea was always going to include various performers, and we will continue to include as many as we can, whether it being DJ’s, a band, some poetry, dancers, visuals, whatever, and we’re hoping to get some more acts down to Cornwall too.

The record shop dream may still become a reality, along with running a music venue (in order to put on all what we like), and I’m working on these, combining the two would be ace and we’re on the hunt for a venue. In the meantime, I’m using the Spinout Shop on the website to sell some specially picked releases to share. We really do appreciate the continued support, bookings, socialising, laffs, friendships, beers, and of course, the events we are able to attend (including the mighty fine Retro Man nights). I’d also like to take this moment to thank ‘the Mess’ (Jon, Darryl, Wolf and Chris) and all that have sailed in her (or bought the 7”…!). Graham Semark, all our Spinout show listeners worldwide, Mole and Lois, Russell Crocodile, Dave Grimshaw, Russ Wilkins, Adam Cooper, Adrian Gibson, Jordan Cinco, John Manion and Steve from Retro Man Blog for all their continued help, support and services to all Spinout affairs. All the bands and promoters that put so much effort in to what they do, and of course, my partner in musical crime, the one and only Little Miss Mojo (Emma), who I’ve had the pleasure (and support) to build this all with.

Check out the Spinout Productions new web-site here for further information on all the Spinout news and happenings and how to order the new 7" single by Sergeants Mess. You can hear one side of the Single in Episode 29 of Retrosonic Podcast. With thanks to Amy and Lee.
