Don Craine Tribute at The Half Moon Putney with Downliners Sect, The Masonics and The Fallen Leaves, August 21st 2022

What a fantastic turnout on Sunday afternoon for the special matinee tribute show to Don Craine, the Deerstalker wearing R'n'B guitar legend of Downliners Sect who sadly passed away earlier this year. The occasion was also used to pay tribute to former Downliners guitarist Del Dwyer and large posters of the two hung on the backdrop, which was a nice touch. The fundraiser and celebration was really well organised by Rob Green and Ron Symmons of The Fallen Leaves to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and included not only, three top bands but also a charity auction which included some tasty signed records, books and white label test pressings from Spinout Nuggets, Billy Childish, Damaged Goods and Ace Records. There were also signed books by artist Jamie Reid and a superb package from the Eel Pie Island Museum, which is a must visit if you are in Twickenham. Rob Green acted as Auctioneer with a nice line in quips, a drumstick as a gavel and a snare drum to bash once the items had been sold. The good news was that all the items presented were sold and I'm sure that well over £1,000 must have been raised from the auction itself.

It was great to be back at The Half Moon again, scene of most of my Retro Man Blog Nights over the years and I had to remember that it wasn't my gig so I couldn't go backstage and help myself to the rider! The Fallen Leaves opened proceedings with "Begin Again" and slammed through a short and sharp set peppered with some promising sounding new songs such as "Rosalina" and "Worried Well" from their forthcoming new LP. I haven't seen The Leaves since before lockdown and they were even better than ever - former Subway Sect guitarist Rob Symmons unique blistering style leaves people standing there in awe and frontman Rob Green's idiosyncratic performance and impressive croon is always a joy. Drummer Buddy Ascott, who you can often hear as my co-host at Retrosonic Podcast  crams all his years of experience from his time in The Chords, The Moment, Speakeasy and many other bands to sublime effect in The Fallen Leaves. His John Maher-style fills and sharp, tight rolls add a dynamism to the Leaves sound. His rhythm section partner Gaz on bass leaps around the stage like Dee Dee Ramone, adding an air of unpredictability and a nice contrast to the two Rob's more studied approach. The band will be playing at the Dublin Castle in Camden on September 10th so if you're free, please go along and you'll see one of the best live acts around.

Next up were The Masonics who never fail to entertain with their raw Medway Delta R'n'B and Beat and they didn't disappoint today with their catchy, danceable numbers. Like The Fallen Leaves, the band were good friends with Don and Downliners Sect and they regularly shared stages together. Of course, drummer Bruce Brand was also once in Thee Headcoats Sect with his Milkshakes and Pop Rivets colleague, Billy Childish along with Don and Keith from Downliners Sect so there's a lot of shared history between them all. The Masonics were joined by Ludella Black for a superb run through of "Why Don't You Smile Now" and they left everyone smiling and thoroughly satisfied.

Downliners Sect closed the afternoon with a rollicking set of good time R'n'B featuring founder member Keith Grant on bass and vocals and you can only wonder why the band never quite achieved the fame of their early contemporaries, after all Rod Stewart and Steve Marriott once wanted to join them! So, a poignant but nevertheless thoroughly entertaining afternoon that will live long in the memory, in fact I wonder if it might become a regular occurrence? Anyway, well done to Rob Symmons and Rob Green and all involved in making it such a special event. You can hear Rob Green and Buddy Ascott of The Fallen Leaves talking to me about the background and preparations for the show in Episode 48 of Retrosonic Podcast which also includes an exclusive Headcoats Sect track and is available for free on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts or from Soundcloud below:

Downliners Sect, The Masonics & The Fallen Leaves - Tribute Show for Don Craine at The Half Moon Putney, August 21st

Sunday August 21st at our favourite venue The Half Moon in Putney sees a very special afternoon tribute show for the head Headcoat, the late, great Don Craine of The Downliners Sect. Contemporaries of the Rolling Stones, Pretty Things and The Yardbirds, Downliners Sect came into being in Spring 1963 when deerstalker-hatted rhythm guitarist Don Craine found Keith Grant and the Sect was born. They played their own brash and exciting brand of R'n'B and still do, Don and Keith played together for 60 years. They agreed that, whatever happened to either of them, the group would carry on. With the sad loss of Don in February, Keith, as promised, carries the name Downliners Sect on. This concert is a tribute to the Deerstalker wearing Head man himself, Don Craine. Downliners Sect fans and friends, The Masonics and The Fallen Leaves will be fitting special guests on the day. In fact, Don and Keith teamed up with Billy Childish and Bruce Brand, the current Masonics drummer, to form Thee Headcoat Sect in the 90’s. The Fallen Leaves are rooted in the classic vein of their locality of Eel Pie Island/Richmond/Twickenham British Beat and R'n'B and feature members of Subway Sect and The Chords. This is sure to be a very special afternoon so book your tickets directly from the Half Moon Putney now from this link. All proceeds to Macmillan Cancer Support. For more details please check out the Facebook Event page here and please note this is an afternoon session starting at 1pm. Here are some great photos of The Downliners Sect by my Retro Man Blog colleague, the photographer Paul Slattery.

The Fay Hallam Group at the Retro Man Blog Night, Half Moon Putney with King Mojo & DJ Lee Grimshaw

The Fay Hallam Group at The Half Moon Putney - Photo Retro Man Blog
Huge thanks to all that came along to our latest Retro Man Blog Night at The Half Moon Putney last Saturday, we really appreciate the support from all who turned up and made it yet another very special evening. Headliners The Fay Hallam Group treated us to a superb set featuring songs from throughout Fay's musical career. From Makin' Time's Mod Soul classic "Feels Like It's Love" via Phaze's groovy instrumental "Sixty Six" right up to a brand new unreleased track from their forthcoming LP "Propellor". Along the way we had tracks from The Fay Hallam Trinity such as "1975" and a crunching "Always The Sky" rubbing shoulders with a selection of tunes from her collaboration with The Bongolian and a shimmering cover of "Spooky". They played some excellent songs from the current album "House of Now" and the classic Soul of the single "Now That It's Over" with Fay's son Josh taking over Magnus Carlson's vocal parts. The band, including Paul Weller collaborator Andy Lewis, were on top form and got called back for two well deserved encores. Opening the show we were delighted to welcome back King Mojo for their second appearance at a Retro Man Blog Night following their stunning support at out SolarFlares reunion shows a couple of years ago. They played most of the excellent debut LP "Do Not Feed The Dancing Bear" and their powerful Hammond driven songs went down really well with the crowd. Also impressing everyone with his customary cool music taste was DJ Lee Grimshaw from the Spinout Show and it was great to have him involved once again. Thanks to Lee, the bands and all the Staff at The Half Moon, and once again a big thank you to those who turned up - it really does make it worthwhile.

You can hear chat prior to the gig in our latest episode of Retrosonic Podcast with our special guest Brett Buddy Ascott, drummer with The Chords and The Fallen Leaves, who also played with Fay in Speakeasy. There are tracks featuring Fay with The Bongolian and Speakeasy and our favourite King Mojo song along with Lee Grimshaw's latest release on his own Spinout Nuggets label.

I'd like to say a huge thank you to all those that came along to our last Retro Man Blog Night at The Half Moon Putney on October 13th which saw the return of Ebbot Lundberg & The Indigo Children. Despite the usual engineering works that cripple our capital city on most weekends there was a really great turn-out and we really appreciate all the various trials and tribulations that went into getting to the venue. It was also great to see that so many people had travelled over from Sweden too including the original webmaster of The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Daniel, and fellow moderator Hans. Long-time TSOOL video crew Matz and Chicago were there along with photographer Katarina Hansson, who took the great photos for our gig poster. Thanks also to staff at The Half Moon and of course to our Special Guests The Galileo 7 who opened the show and treated us to a superb set which included some very promising new songs.

Ebbot and a new-look Indigo Children, who included recent additions Alfred on bass, Stina on keyboards and Anton on drums along with Ebbot's regular guitarists Billy and Oskar, put in a mind-blowing performance that nearly took the roof off the packed out Half Moon. The set included "Golden Age" by Ebbot's first, and recently reunited band, Union Carbide Production and some Soundtrack of Our Lives favourites such as "Rest In Piece", a blistering "Galaxy Gramophone" and a rapturously received encore of the classic "Mantra Slider". A pick of songs from his debut Indigo Children album were also played alongside two new numbers, the atmospheric opener "Comfort Zone" and the raucous Punk Rock of "Planet Earth Through a Stethoscope".

Thanks to Ebbot, Billy and The Indigo Children, The Galileo 7, Nina and staff at The Half Moon, Katarina Hansson and all those who helped to promote the show and of course to Paul Slattery for the excellent photos. Union Carbide Productions will play three reunion shows in November, first of all at Malmo on the 7th, Stockholm on the 8th and Gothenburg on the 9th and for more information on ticket and venues check out the UCP Facebook page here. Retro Man Blog will be at the UCP Gothenburg show so expect a full report and photos to follow on our return.

The Masonics by Paul Slattery
I'd like to take the opportunity to say a huge "thank you" to all of you who came along to the last Retro Man Blog Night of 2016 at the Half Moon Putney on November 18th. Judging from all the comments it seems like you agreed with me that all three bands were on top form and I appreciate all the great feedback, it really does make it all worthwhile. Thanks of course to The Masonics, Miss Ludella Black, The Baron Four and The Beatpack, it was a pleasure and honour to be able to host such excellent bands. I also really appreciate the many recent requests from bands wishing to play at a future show but unfortunately that was my last Retro Man Blog Night for the foreseeable future. Of course things may change in 2017 but at present I am having a bit of a break from promotions to concentrate on Retrosonic Podcast. However, I have already been in discussions about a couple of very special events next year so please watch this space...!!
