Welcome to the ramblings of a man who really should have grown out of listening to "that sort of music" a long, long time ago...A place to share thoughts and photographs on music and related paraphernalia.
In this episode of our Retrosonic Podcast Lockdown Lowdown series we welcome Mike and Elsa from one of our favourite new groups, The Jack Cades, following the release of their superb second album "Perfect View". Mike and Elsa take us on a musical trip through some of their favourite albums, singles, gigs, happenings and people that had an influence on their own impressive work with Thee Vicars, The Baron Four, The Missing Souls and of course with The Jack Cades. Generously soundtracked by some of their favourite songs including Nirvana, The Milkshakes, The Masonics, Rodriguez, The Stone Roses, Buzzcocks, The Beatles, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Spacemen 3, The Squires and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. There's also a pick of their very own music from Thee Vicars, The Missing Souls, The Baron Four and of course The Jack Cades.

Wanda & Dottie in front of Dave Taylor's lighting - Photo by Retro Man Blog
Hipsville, our favourite musical (and social) event of the year never disappoints and although I probably say this every time, I think this really was one of the best so far. Despite various setbacks with location and venue changes over the years, I believe that the tireless and enthusiastic organisers Andrew, Ade, Alexandra and their team hit on a winning formula that managed to combine all the very best Hipsville elements that we have grown to love. Hipsville is the perfect antidote to all the current greyness, bad news and depression enveloping Brexit Britain – it is a bright and colourful splash of Hawaiian shirts, fez’s and fancy dress. Bands and fans from all over the world congregate to enjoy the music, make new friends and basically, party! After two years at Margate’s vintage Dreamland funfair, Hipsville has relocated to the town’s Cliftonville area to the Lido and the nearby historic Winter Gardens, which once hosted Laurel & Hardy and The Beatles.

I thought both venues worked perfectly – the suitably scuzzy Lido was ideal for this year’s Soho-A-Go-Go theme with its red upholstery, dark nooks and crannies and sticky carpets – just like an old-school Soho boozer or afterhours drinking den. Dave Taylor from Enjoy Yourself provided stunning lighting and visuals and his impressive oil projections transformed the Lido into a seething multi-coloured Psychedelic dreamworld. This all made for a perfect backdrop for the gorgeous Hipsville Go-Go dancers to strut their stuff - Wanda de Lullabies, Miss Diabolik, Alexandra Beat Girl, Celia Formica, Tina Tuna, Nocturna, and although sadly there was no Miss Ge Veve this year, we did have the welcome return of Dottie Gooseberry. This year saw the official introduction of two Go-Go boys too, Steve and Khalid from The Action Men, who both seemed to thoroughly enjoy the whole experience. The Jack Cades opened up proceedings in the Lido on the Friday evening and despite only just releasing their excellent debut album “Music For Children” on Dirty Water Records last year, they included a few really promising sounding new songs in the set. I sincerely hope this means that there will be more good stuff released by the band very soon indeed.

The Deadly Spirits from Sweden were great fun and their raw Rock ‘n’ Soul went down really well with the crowd. The band are from Karlstad so it was nice to bump into a couple of them and chat about mutual friends and bands such as Tonbruket, Cat & the Underdogs, Nymphet Noodlers and Mattias Hellberg. The final band, The Anomalys, powered through a set of fast and raucous Punk Rock and then it was over to our favourite Hipsville DJ's who over the weekend included Neil ‘Sick’ Smith, Adam Diddy Wah, Carl Combover and Fritz Buzzsaw who all ensured the party never stopped.

On Saturday afternoon, the Glass Jar hosted the Tiki cocktail Bar and we enjoyed a drink while being serenaded by The Mighty Tsar and theur swampy Skiffle Calypso and some suitably mellow tunes courtesy of DJ Ian Greensmith. We then wanted to see Das Clamps for the first time and just managed to squeeze our way into the superb, but tiny, Fez Bar that was so packed it resembled a Tokyo subway train at rush hour. The duo comprise Miss Tangerine Tassels on guitar and vocals and then there is her sidekick on drums and vocals, Tina Marina who for some reason reminds me of Tina from Oh! Gunquit...anyway, they played foot stomping stripped back Cramps inspired songs from their forthcoming album “Shit Music For Shit People” which is out soon on the excellent Trash Wax Records. Unfortunately, French band The Scaners had to pull out at the last minute due to one of the members breaking their leg, which was really bad news as I was looking forward to seeing them very much. However, the good news was that The Baron Four stepped in at short notice and proved more than capable substitutes with their own brand of upbeat Garage R'n'B.

Then it was over to the grand Winter Gardens and there were more excellent visuals from Dave Taylor – movies of Swinging 60’s London and Soho Street signs and the stage had red telephone boxes on either side for the Go-Go girls, boys, and gorillas to dance in. The DJ booth was imaginatively transformed into a seedy sex shop. Tonight’s opening act were the fabulous Autoramas and as regular Blog followers will know, the Brazilian space age retro rockers have fast become one of our favourite bands ever since we first saw them play courtesy of Hipsville back in 2015. Their unique blend of Bubble-gum Garage Rock and B-52’s/Devo style New Wave with crunching bass sound and Gabriel’s trademark vibrato effects pedal was simply mind-blowing. The always glamorous Erika adds keyboards, Theremin and guitar and dances non-stop, even getting down to dance with the audience too. They are a fantastic band, one of those that you really have to try to see play live and such lovely people too.

Next up it’s the U.K. debut for the hotly tipped Californian band The Night Times who wowed the crowd with their traditional nuggets era Psych. They have a superb drummer who was a blur of hair as she thrashed away behind her kit and the lead vocalist/bassist was throwing himself about so much that his bass kept going out of tune. They were such a great live act and there was a tangible buzz about them throughout the whole weekend. Next on stage it was the turn of MFC Chicken who played a thoroughly entertaining set of Fabulous Wailers songs that had everyone dancing along. Classics like “Mashi” and “Out of Our Tree” went down a storm and they even made the perennial classic “Louie Louie” sound fresh. There was also a surprise appearance by Elsa from The Jack Cades who joined the band to wow everyone with a soulful vocal performance.

The Action Men entertained us with an amusing dance routine, which featured a cameo from Mr A, and then the winners of the fancy dress competition were announced. In the sad absence of Davros and his Deep Space Deviants, this year saw The Stags put in a hilarious performance with a Mary Whitehouse lookalike on vocals and a band comprising Policemen in a uniform of helmets, tunics and suspenders. What a perfect ending to a fabulous day. On Sunday, it was back to the Fez Bar to be serenaded by Professor Baba and His Invisible Band who bewitched us with some entertaining Voodoo Blues and general mumbo jumbo. I thought it was strange how the Professor reminded me of Simon from Oh! Gunquit – that band must have many lookalikes running around Margate. We made it into the Lido just as Spanish band Los Wilds were finishing their set and the wild-eyed frontman was down to his underpants and cowboy boots. A normal Sunday afternoon at Hipsville then.

Next came The Day Tymes, the not-so-subtle alter ego of The Night Times who blew the Lido apart with their ‘secret’ show. During a wild version of “Gloria” the singer put his bass down and jumped into the crowd for the duration of the song prompting David Arnold of The Stags to take over on bass duties, he should have quickly tuned it up while he was about it. The good news is that the band are hanging around in the UK for a couple more weeks and as I write they are in North Down Sound Studios with Lois and Mole from State Records recording songs for a new single. They will also be playing Brighton on May 17th and Weirdsville in London on Saturday May 18th so if you missed Hipsville be sure to catch them play if you can, you will not be disappointed. The Hipsville team could finally relax and let their hair down at the Sunday night after show party at the Cinque Ports pub – they had invited legendary DJ Mike Gunn (himself no stranger to a bit of sleaze) over from L.A. to close the weekend in his inimitable style. We all kept our eyes on our wallets and our whisky and ensured that no Go-Go dancer was left unchaperoned in the presence of the lascivious titan of the turntable! What a great weekend, I just cannot wait to do it all again next year.

The Baron Four celebrate the release of their long-awaited second album "Silvaticus" with a launch party gig at The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Road, London on Friday June 16th. Support comes from The Teamsters and Elsa from The Missing Souls will be DJ'ing in the downstairs bar until the early hours. You'll be able to buy copies of the album on CD or vinyl on the night prior to the official release date of June 30th. If you order tickets in advance you'll be in with the chance of snagging a limited edition numbered CD featuring an instrumental version of "Just How You Want To Be". You can get tickets at the bargain price of £4.95 from here.
"Silvaticus" is being released on Get Hip Recordings and here's some more info from the label..."ten new, original songs by singer/bassist Mike Whittaker jostle for space with two covers: the recently unearthed "Wild Angel" by James Bond & The Agents from 1967, and a radical reworking of the Bo Diddley classic "I Can Tell" featuring relative newcomer CK Smith on some of the dirtiest blues harp you’re likely to hear this year! Elsewhere, Mr. Smith lays down some killer guitar parts, deft and assured, with just the right amount of grit, complementing fellow axe-man Joe Eakins’ relentless rhythm. There’s even a 12-string in there! Set for release on Friday June 30th, the album will be available on Opaque Orange color vinyl (limited to 300), classic black vinyl (limited to 200), CD and digital. All LP’s include a complimentary download coupon".
Here's the band filmed at our Retro Man Blog Night at The Half Moon night last November.

Following on from our November Retro Man Blog Night, The Masonics and The Baron Four were once more sharing the same stage, this time at a benefit for the War Child charity organized by Ye Nuns who were on the bill too. A packed out Lexington also had the opportunity to participate in what must be the coolest raffle ever with prizes donated by State Records, Damaged Goods Records, Weirdsville, Dirty Water Records, Faber and Bloomsbury Publishing, photographer Jeff Pitcher and artwork by The Masonics and Miss Ludella Black. Probably the most unconventional prize was a customized triangular road sign showing a Nun digging up the road and the lucky winners had the pleasure of having to carry it all the way back to the Medway on the train!

All three bands played great sets with The Baron Four in particular proving they are one of the most exciting live acts around and their new songs, in particular "Don't Need You Anymore" (which must surely be their next single!) promise that 2017 should be a very special year for them. Ye Nuns were frankly superb, on paper a tribute band to The Monks - always one of the most idiosyncratic and well, downright weird bands of the '60's Garage Rock scene - seems a strange idea.
The Baron Four - Photo Copyright Retro Man Blog
The fact that Ye Nuns are a seven piece all-girl band taking the stage in Nun's habits just makes it all the more bizarre yet for some reason it all falls into place perfectly! The Monks clanging, abrasive songs in a way pre-dated Krautrock and I can understand why The Fall's Mark E Smith is such a huge fan as they can sometimes be as irritating as they are addictive. Tonight Ye Nuns crank up the volume and blast us with ear-busting fuzz guitar and scathing electric banjo but sweeten it all with some impressive vocal harmonizing. It's probably the band's most accessible songs "We Do Wie Du" and "Oh How To Do Now" that go down the best with the crowd and on the last song a vitriolic "I Hate You" they are joined by a second bassist to really ramp up the action even more!

The Masonics with special guest Miss Ludella Black treat us to their usual entertaining set of good time Garage Rock 'n' Roll including some songs from their mighty fine new album "Obermann Rides Again". All in all a great night out in the build up to Xmas and all for a great cause too so please check out more details on the War Child charity if you have chance, their web-site is here.

I'd like to take the opportunity to say a huge "thank you" to all of you who came along to the last Retro Man Blog Night of 2016 at the Half Moon Putney on November 18th. Judging from all the comments it seems like you agreed with me that all three bands were on top form and I appreciate all the great feedback, it really does make it all worthwhile. Thanks of course to The Masonics, Miss Ludella Black, The Baron Four and The Beatpack, it was a pleasure and honour to be able to host such excellent bands. I also really appreciate the many recent requests from bands wishing to play at a future show but unfortunately that was my last Retro Man Blog Night for the foreseeable future. Of course things may change in 2017 but at present I am having a bit of a break from promotions to concentrate on Retrosonic Podcast. However, I have already been in discussions about a couple of very special events next year so please watch this space...!!

The good news is that The Masonics and The Baron Four will be playing together again very soon on December 21st at The Lexington in Islington along with Ye Nuns. This is a charity fundraiser for War Child and you can get tickets and further details from here. A nice warm up for Xmas!

The line-up for the 2016 Hipsville Weekender has just been announced and mighty fine it is looking too! The whole event has moved from Bisley to Bordon & Oakhanger Sports Centre, Bolley Avenue, Bordon, Hampshire GU35 9HG and dates are confirmed as May 13th, 14th and 15th. I don't think the sleepy Hampshire countryside knows what it is in for! There will be free camping on-site and free parking for cars, camper vans and caravans and you can check all the accommodation and transport options at the Hipsville website here. The Sports Centre has a fully licensed (and cheap) bar open until 3am and there will be various food outlets and a vintage market on site too. Not forgetting all the Hipsville favourites will be present and correct - the vintage car and bike show, the Tiki Bar, gorgeous Go-Go girls such as Dottie Gooseberry, Venus Raygun, Alexandra Beat Girl, Celia Aloha and Wanda de Lullabies and marauding stage-diving Gorillas. Then we get to the superb line-up of international bands which include Retro Man Blog favourites The Jackets, The Baron Four and The Missing Souls, all three responsible for some of our "Best Gigs of 2015" and a host of other great acts such as Archie & The Bunkers from America, The Wildebeests, The Weird Omens from France and The Stompin' Riff Raffs from Japan, who do some strange things with a theremin!
You can still check out our Retrosonic Podcast Hipsville 2015 Special in which we chatted to Mr A one of the main organizers in the build up to last year's event, talking about the history of Hipsville and their monthly Weirdsville club nights and You Got Good Taste Podcasts. It's always difficult to review Weirdsville club nights, and I mean that in the best possible way. It's just that there are some gigs when it is nice to go along, relax and not worry about taking photos, notes and videos all the time. Kind of defeats the object of doing a music Blog I know, and of course I want to promote the bands and all that, but sometimes you just want to go with the flow and enjoy the acts to the full, and I certainly did that tonight. I did start off with the best intentions however as I had never seen The Teamsters or The Baron Four play live before and I was really looking forward to seeing both. I knew what to expect from Les Grys-Grys as I had seen them play a quite stunning set at Hipsville Weekender back in May. That night I had to compare them to the full-on visual and sonic assault of my favourite ever live act The Soundtrack of Our Lives.
The Teamsters at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
The Teamsters at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
The night started off with The Teamsters, the London based band fronted by singer-songwriter-guitarist Tom Wing. Retrosonic Podcast listeners will know that I have already played the band and I am a big fan of their excellent self-titled debut album and "Play Along With The Teamsters" E.P. both of which are well worth getting hold of. Tonight Tom and Bassist Daniel Fell are joined by the legendary Bruce Brand of The Milkshakes, The Len Bright Combo, The Pop Rivets, Suzi Chunk and Groovy Uncle, Thee Headcoats etc etc etc...Oh, and The Masonics of course...! Bruce is filling in on a part time basis but on tonight's showing it would be great if they could make it a more permanent appointment. Tom apologizes that tonight's set includes a fair smattering of slower numbers, but he doesn't need to, it all sounds great. There's a lot of new songs too, well I'm guessing they are new as I don't recognise many, and I'm hoping that means there is a new album on the horizon.
The Baron Four at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog

Next up is The Baron Four, who have been raved about and recommended to me for a while from various people with impeccable taste in music. The band were formed following the sad circumstances that led to the end of the respected Garage Rock band Thee Vicars, I'd heard about this from a friend and although I knew the name I hadn't really got into them. Following all the raving and after getting a copy of their superb new 7" single "Walking Out" on State Records, I was really looking forward to seeing The Baron Four. I guessed they would be good but I didn't realise just how good! They came bursting out of the blocks, and proceeded to run through most of the faultless debut album "Out Of The Wild Come...The Baron Four" with a couple of choice covers thrown in such as Bo Diddley's "I Can Tell" and The Swinging Blue Jeans "You're No Good". In fact these two songs shine a light on The Baron Four's sound - there's the raw and primal riffing of early R'n'B coupled with bouncing Merseybeat pop and its chiming guitars and catchy backing vocals.
Joe of The Baron Four at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
The Baron Four at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
The Baron Four have some great songs - there are so many highlights from tonight's set with the double whammy of "Be My Girl" and the Cavern Club freak-out of "She Said Yeah" in particular sticking in my head. However it was the next song "Wild Angel" that really blew the roof off the Fiddlers Elbow and the gig suddenly shifted up a few gears. You could sense this was the turning point as the crowd really responded, the temperature also went up a fair few degrees and I was chuffed that I managed to capture the song on video. I didn't recognise it, and was disappointed that it didn't feature on any of their recordings. I later found out it was an obscure cover of a old James Bond & The Agents track, and I really hope the band consider recording a version of it.
Troy & Mole of The Baron Four at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
The Baron Four at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
When they slammed into "Walking Out", that was it, any chance of writing a lucid and complete review went out the window it was just too good. "Yes I Do" was the final nail in the Blogging coffin as the superb lead guitar work of Troy Lowin-Green, alternating between fuzzed up chords and almost Surf style riffs, really hit home. The band were all great visually - Troy pointing his guitar out into the crowd, rhythm guitarist Joe Eakins is a live-wire, he seems to spend more time out in the audience playing than on the stage. A bottle of vodka gets passed around the band and the front row, one of the monitors goes flying, it's bloody great. Front-man Mike Whittaker is one of a rare breed, a lead singer who plays bass and makes it look cool, a difficult thing to carry off!
Mike of The Baron Four at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
Mole of The Baron Four at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
When he's not singing he's on his knees bashing hell of his bass one minute then scraping the fret-board against the mic stand the next. Then we get to drummer Mole, who I have raved about enough here on the Blog already with his performances in the new re-jigged line-up of The Galileo 7. Resplendent in fez and huge white rimmed sunglasses he is worth the entrance price alone, a non-stop blur of flailing drumsticks, a veritable Keith Moon of the contemporary Garage Rock scene! He also adds some top notch backing vocal harmonies along with Joe that elevate the songs to another level. So now I can join the already converted and preach the greatness of The Baron Four!
Les Grys-Grys at Weirdsville - Photo copyright Retro Man Blog
So by the time Les Grys-Grys came on I had definitely deserted my post and despite sneaking a few snaps here and there, all thoughts of doing a feature had gone. The band are just unbelievably good live, and rather like TSOOL, each band member has a distinct character and it's all mesmerising to watch. Their supercharged and authentic take on the Sixties Blues and R'n'B sounds of Richmond, Twickenham, Eel Pie Island merged with their love of The Flamin' Groovies is a joy to behold, and for a young band from Montpellier that's no mean feat. It's a relentless groove that doesn't let up on the energy for one minute, it's simply stunning. I was totally absorbed so I will hand over the quill and ink pot to Megan to sum it up better than I can at this point..."Instant review - If Les Grys-Grys are playing anywhere near you just go. No excuses. Go!" Thank you Megan. If you want to read more about Les Grys-Grys then please check out the feature on their appearance at Hipsville in the Blog archive here, which also includes some great pics by the Rock Photographer Paul Slattery.
