The Beatpack "All Good Things (Turn To Dust)" - New Album Review by Ms Sheringham-Boom

The Beatpack "All Good Things (Turn To Dust)" - Spinout Nuggets

Finally, the second long-player from rhythm and beat legends The Beatpack has landed (thanks to Spinout Nuggets) . It’s been quite a wait (a decade or three) and I’m certain you’ll already be familiar with their sporadic 7” releases over the years. You may have even been to one of their formidable live shows. So you’ll need no convincing from me about how bloody fantastic this new offering is, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. The Beatpack take us on a journey that looks purposefully into a filter of ‘60s soundscapes. Each track whirls and winds it’s way though known territory, but that’s why we’re all here right? ‘All Good Things’ kicks off with the buzzsaw riff of ‘Black Sea Tobacco Pose’, this coupled with Dellar’s minimal yet meaningful descriptives, and the addition of breaks*, builds the anticipation to the max. Cool, very cool. Now frug along to the insanely groovy tracks like ‘Greek St 2am’ and ‘Footsteps, Echo’. Hear the sublime R'n'B/Psych-Rock of ‘Endless Halls Of Her Reflection’, and ‘Thru The Iron Gate’, both giving echoes of peak Yardbirds. Violin bow, anyone? Likewise, closing track ‘All Good Things (Turn To Dust)’ is a fitting end to this showcase. The 12 tracks, recorded at the prestigious all-analogue Gizzard Studios in London, captures their live voracity. Dellar and the boys bestow their undying love, fierceness, confidence, and pure joy to this LP. It’s a modernist masterpiece, and my personal favourite LP of 2022. Available now via the band's Bandcamp page, the trusty Spinout Nuggets shop, and all good records stores!

The Beatpack "Rhymes & Blues" - Ms Sheringham Boom reviews the band's new E.P. out now on Heavy Soul Records

This review is long overdue, and I can only apologise to the band who very kindly sent a copy of their new EP 'Rhymes and Blues', which is out now on Heavy Soul records, up to Edinburgh for me to review. You may not know this, but R&B stalwarts The Beatpack have been around for quite some time, since they were but slips of lads. Okay, the line-up has changed now and then, but in their current format they are a force to be reckoned with. This is their first release since the ferocious 2016 'Back Behind and Infront' EP on State Records, and about time too. ‘Howlin’ Fever Blues’ according to the press release ‘comes on like a late ’67 Texan garageband suffering from an extreme Yardbirds fixation and with fuzz pedals set to destroy’. I can’t disagree with that. But can I add to it? I’ll try my best. A souped up Blues Magoos ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’ is the first comparison that springs to mind, and yet that doesn’t really cover it. The full-on drama of this track, with it’s use of caesura (pauses) builds anticipation and only gives one enough time to draw quick breath before it descends into fuzzed-out madness. Absolutely phenomenal. ‘Sadie’ isn’t at all what I was expecting. It’s pleasantly mellow, with Zombies-style electric piano. But don’t be fooled - flip it, and both ‘How Come You Sleep So Well?’ and ‘Tumbles Like A Domino’ are full of chunky familiar riffs. Whist it’s clear where the bands influences lie, The Beatpack are by no means copycats. They make their own brand of R&B Garage that is full of passion and energy, and then take it to the next level. If you haven’t seen them live, then I urge you to go and see them asap. And on that subject, you can catch The Beatpack are headlining at Beatwave this year, and they’ll also be heading up to Scotland for a few dates towards the end of the year.

The Masonics, The Baron Four & The Beatpack - Exclusive Paul Slattery photos from the Retro Man Blog Night November 18th

The Masonics by Paul Slattery
I'd like to take the opportunity to say a huge "thank you" to all of you who came along to the last Retro Man Blog Night of 2016 at the Half Moon Putney on November 18th. Judging from all the comments it seems like you agreed with me that all three bands were on top form and I appreciate all the great feedback, it really does make it all worthwhile. Thanks of course to The Masonics, Miss Ludella Black, The Baron Four and The Beatpack, it was a pleasure and honour to be able to host such excellent bands. I also really appreciate the many recent requests from bands wishing to play at a future show but unfortunately that was my last Retro Man Blog Night for the foreseeable future. Of course things may change in 2017 but at present I am having a bit of a break from promotions to concentrate on Retrosonic Podcast. However, I have already been in discussions about a couple of very special events next year so please watch this space...!!

The Fallen Leaves, The Mynd Set & The Beatpack at The 12 Bar Club - Exclusive Paul Slattery Photographs

The Fallen Leaves outside The 12 Bar Club - Photo copyright Paul Slattery
Tomorrow, January 07th, will sadly see the end of my regular visits to the 12 Bar Club, a place I have grown to love dearly over the past few years. I have seen so many great bands and made some great friends there too but due to the scandalous redevelopment of Denmark Street, the owners have to leave the premises by mid-January. This means that tomorrow will be the end of The Fallen Leaves' legendary Minimum R'n'B Club nights at the current location. It's such a shame, especially as December's show was one of the best ever with The Fallen Leaves supported by The Mynd Set and The Beatpack, all three bands were great and the place was packed out. As a little tribute to the 12 Bar we have an exclusive unreleased new song "Motorcycle Girl" from The Fallen Leaves in Episode 17 of Retrosonic Podcast, which also features a track from The Mynd Set's debut album. We previously featured The Beatpack in Episode 16 which is still available to download for free at the iTunes store or at our Soundcloud page. Anyway, here are some exclusive Paul Slattery photos of the show...Thanks to Barnet Mark and the staff at the 12 Bar and good luck with the new premises and also lets hope The Fallen Leaves can sort out a venue for their excellent Club nights. The band have put on these regular nights, offering support slots to a variety of great groups, and often there are four bands for only £6.00, or £5.00 for a flyer. It is really sad to think that another venue will be no more and a chance for bands to play live will be soon gone, so please come along to the 12 Bar in Denmark Street tomorrow and send The Leaves off in the style that they deserve.
