Retrosonic Podcast Episode 51 "2022 You're Wondering Now" with Buddy Ascott

Welcome to Episode 51 of Retrosonic Podcast where we welcome former drummer with The Chords Buddy Ascott into the 'studio' on New Year's Eve to look back on 2022. Buddy, now playing with The Fallen Leaves, is currently writing his memoirs and he treats us to a reading from a chapter about an unfortunate incident in Guildford Civic Hall in 1979 involving The Undertones, Jimmy Pursey and some ex-Sex Pistols. He also talks about more recent gig experiences which include drumming with The 79ers as specials guests at The Vapors' weekend event at the iconic Portmeirion village, location of the cult TV show The Prisoner. Then we cover The Fallen Leaves shows at the Dublin Castle and the Don Craine tribute at the Half Moon Putney, plus we get a sneak preview of a song from the Leaves' next album. We also take a look at some of Retro Man Blog's favourite LPs, Singles, Compilations and Gigs of the year and play a selection of great tracks from The Clash with Ranking Roger, Rhoda Dakar, The Limiñanas, The Prisoners and Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band. We also announce our Band of The Year - The Undertones - for some superb gigs, their compilation "Dig What You Need", Damian O'Neill and Billy Doherty joining Baby Shakes on stage for "Teenage Kicks" and related releases such as That Petrol Emotion's stunning box-set compilation and Damian's solo album "An Crann". Then there's a more sombre look at just some of the influential musicians who sadly passed away in 2022 including Chris Bailey, Wilko Johnson, Jet Black and Terry Hall but we celebrate their legacy with music from The Saints, Dr. Feelgood, The Specials and The Stranglers. Happy New Year to you and here's looking forward to more great music in 2023, we hope you enjoy the show! Retrosonic Podcast with Inge Johansson on Gatuplan, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, CSS, Imperial State Electric & Much More...

For the latest episode of our special Lockdown Lowdown series we welcome former bassist with The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Inge Johansson into the virtual Retrosonic studio to discuss the excellent debut album "Kampen Går Vidare!" by his new solo project Gatuplan. In this thoroughly entertaining chat, Inge takes on a musical journey from the isolation of growing up in a small town in the north of Sweden to finding hope and creative inspiration in the music of Heavy Metal and Punk Rock. There are tales of his first forays into becoming a musician and the early influences on his bass playing. This leads onto touring and recording with acts as diverse as Totalt Jävla Mörker, CSS, Nicke Andersson's Imperial State Electric, Cryssis and The Most and Inge cheerfully recounts his time spent with each of these bands and the characters he met and worked with along the way. Of course we cover his time with The (International) Noise Conspiracy and of running Ny Våg, a record label and club night with frontman Dennis Lyxzén. The episode is sound-tracked by superb songs from each of the featured bands along with a selection of some of Inge's most inspirational musical moments from Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Exploited, Chumbawamba and The Specials. Of course, we also concentrate on Gatuplan and Inge explains the story behind the project, introduces his new bandmates and confesses the somewhat surprising influence behind the choice of band name. So, crank up the volume, sit back and enjoy!

"Specialized Calling - Combat Cancer" a New Compilation of Clash Cover Versions In Aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust

One of Retro Man Blog's favourite bands, French Boutik, contacted us to let us know all about a new compilation that they are involved with in aid of the The Teenage Cancer Trust. The band are big supporters of the charity having already travelled over to the U.K. earlier this year to appear at the London leg of the yearly fund-raising March Of The Mods campaign, which you can read about in the Blog archive here. The Specialized Project has announced that The Clash will be the focus of their fourth annual campaign in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust. Specialized Four will be a four disc, 70 song compilation entitled "Combat Cancer" featuring 70 Clash cover versions donated from bands around the world. The project is the accumulation of work of over 400 musicians, engineers and producers and includes guest performances from Mick Jones (The Clash), Horace Panter & Lynval Golding (The Specials), Dreadzone, Dennis Bovell, Rat Scabies (The Damned), Jona Lewie and Big Jim Paterson (Dexy's Midnight Runners). All of the tracks will be exclusive to the Combat Cancer album and all have been recorded in 2015 specifically to appear on the album. You can pre-order "Combat Cancer" from the Specialized Project web-site on-line store here. All funds raised from this album will go to The Teenage Cancer Trust and the National Foundation for Youth Music.

Here's a video explaining a bit more about the Specialized Project and Teenage Cancer Trust.

And here's a video to French Boutik's contribution, a cover of The Clash's "City of the Dead".
